Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick made a career of refusing to settle into one genre. He made war movies, science fiction movies, horror movies, romance movies. He didn’t make many movies, but when he did, they were the pinnacles of their genre. He was able to make such masterful works in such diverse genres because he deeply understood what made each genre work. But he is truly a genius because he was able to transcend the clichés and requirements of each category. Kubrick, beyond all else, was interested in humanity. He explored it deeply with every film he made – where we came from, where we were going, and what it means to be a human. This obsession allowed him to create works that were truly unique, but that always had his unmistakable touch.

Paths of Glory (1957)

Full Metal Jacket (1987)
